  1. Making progress at last!

Two more lessons this week. Monday was a bit rough so we went for a trip down over the Downs to do 16B - operating at low level. This meant 1200' and was a bit tricky in the bumpy conditions. We kept to the downwind side of the valleys to avoid sink and bimbled around down past Membury and then back home, doing a couple of practiced forced landings on the way (plenty of nice big fields down there - but why do they always have a power line right across the middle?). A couple of circuits to finish ...

  2. At last a flyable day (but only just...)

After 5 cancellations in a row over the last two weeks at last I've been flying! Weather was marginal - lowish cloud and mist around, but just about OK for circuits (AND NO WIND!!!). Of course that should have made thing easier but I had the usual problem of too long a gap since the last one and had a bit of concentration overload for the first couple, resulting in forgetting simple things like watching my circuit height!

Both strips were wet and a herd of cows had been down the taxiway ...

  3. ...and yet another lesson and a circuit (or three...)

Flying again Friday and more circuits. First one p*ss poor landing but got better (I see a pattern emerging here...). I always (well at least the last two times) seem to need a circuit to get back into it but at least they get better each time round. Circuits are quite intense at Redlands - turn on to Xwind leg as you just cross the end of the strip while still climbing to avoid the houses, then round again on to downwind for the same reason. Usually at 500 then so level out and do pre-landing checks ...

  4. Another lesson - and getting better!

Second lesson after my enforced long break yesterday. Weather pleasant but the wind which was SW in the morning had veered to NNW by the time we went (i.e. X wind again!). Went through the pre-start checks - all secured, throttles tested and closed, radio on, turn the key, all clear and shout Clearprop! then prodded the starter. Cranked over but not a cough. "Aren't you going to switch the mags on then?" came the voice from the back seat...
My excuse is it was only my second flight ...

  5. Flying again (at last!)

First time back in the air in a year! (less a day) This would see how much I remembered! We went for a refresher flight out from Redlands via Lyneham (loads more class G airspace now as the CTR has gone) then down to Wootton Bassett and back along the A4 to Silbury Hill and turned north back to home.

I was pleased I had remembered all the pre-flight checks and once in the plane it all came back. Take-off was fine, although a gusty X wind made things a bit bumpy, then it was ...
