Ouch indeed! Crank case seals and very probably a new set of gears.

Any evidence of oil burn on the rear spark plug? (I'm assuming that gear oil is being drawn into the rear crankcase during primary induction?)

ok update.. engine removed due to the disappearance of the gearbox oil spent the day at eccleston aviation where Simon removed the offending seals and they were very poor chanced being the next flight would have been the last for that engine thank god it had gearbox oil to drink..good news is the crank is A-1 with no corrosion 0.3 & 0.4 the gearbox was sadly on its way out so new gear set and bearing and seals all back together and ready to be re fitted... talking to simon it appears to be that the crank seals are the biggest killer of 503s and when you consider the very reasonable cost of 160 to have them changed by a trained rotax engineer compared to the cost of a rebuilt crank its really a no brainer.. hopefully all will be re fitted by the weekend and back in the air weather permitting then we can start playing with the second quasar we have purchased..

WOW that turned out much cheaper than I, or I guess you, expected. Pleased for you and hope you're back in the air very soon

must admit i am v happy think i will run the new 503 up in a few weeks and get the seals changed on that as well 160 the cost for inspection poto and crank case seals to be fitted have yet to receive the bill for gearset and new bearings.. simon advises that every 6 years is a good rule of thumb for replacing the seals he knows of a 503 with 2500 hours on its original crank... just shows when treated right what a great little engine it is..
