    GT450 Ignition units

    Hi,

Our 2006 Rotax 912S engine doesnít start unless you use a hairdryer on the ignition units. A common fault which affect that engine over a three year period research shows.

I know I can send the units to Holland for repair

    https://www.carmo.nl/index.php?main_...53&language=en

I am told that there is a repair service in the UK. Does anyone know who it is and how I can make contact please? Anyone used them ?

    Regards

    Gramac

My inspector told me recently that repaired units that he has had experience of function for about two years.

Does anyone actually know what goes wrong with them ?
But more important why warming them up makes them work ?

Are yours 6 wire or 4 wire units ?

6 wire units. Apparently a capacitor goes in each unit. If one unit goes the other will fire but when both units fail they will only start when heat is applied from an external source. The heat causes the broken connection in the capacitor to reconnect and the circuit is once again intact. The heat from the engine continues the heat and as such the integrity of the circuit. I am told the repair consists of drilling out the old capacitor and replacing with a better quality one. The Dutch company charges about £175 per unit to repair, or to buy new is about £700 per unit. Annoying that Rotax havenít recalled this part.

with rotax reliability comes rotax deniability this problem as with a few others has been known about for quite some time.
There have been complaints made letters sent but rotax give it the deaf ear and carry on and we as the consumers are left to suck it up and get on with it and pay their over the top prices
fly high fly safe and may you always have the wind at your back

Had the smd ignition problem on my 912s.sent them to holland 10 days later they came back and worked perfectly. Cost was £339 . I think they are excellent option instead of new rotax part at £1400
    Don't fight the urge

Yes. I have no intention of purchasing from Rotax. They must have upgraded the units as this problem only occurs in 2005 to 2008 engines. So guilty know;edge but no recall.

It was only a few years ago that Rotax were selling a pair of CDI units with soft start for £550 a pair.
I can’t believe there is not loads of second hand units up for sale.

I tried to purchase a pair when they were first offered but skydrive were permanently out of stock, but they did sell quite a few sets

There is no justification for the cost of these units if they could sell them for 550 the pair how can they justify trebling the price

Wasn't the price hike after CFS aero came onto the scene?
