Exclamation Mass Ban of fake users

    Afternoon all,

I just banned about 2600 fake users registered on the site, spammers in waiting ....

In case I banned any real people (pretty sure I didn't but it's possible) and you know them, please PM me with their user name and I will correct it.

    All the best,
    Blue Skies.

    Gentreau.

    Thanks Phil.

Fortunately I have learned how to write java scripts to automate my browser.
It still took the java script almost 2 hours to ban them all......

Here's an idea! Why don't we all use our real names, Gentreau and Jetlag? Wouldn't that make the forum easier to police and improve behaviour?

That discussion has already been had many times.

There are valid reasons why some people may not want to use their real names.

Additionally, who is going to do the work to verify that each new member is really who he/she says ?
    Certainly not me.

An automated mass ban is faster in the long run.

I only use Jetlag cos I like it, if you look on my profile you will find my full name, address and contact details .... I have hidden nothing ... even though I have received unwanted attention doing this I continue to do so. There are many good reasons why not everyone can use their real names.

I think most of us with nicknames are fairly easy to trace if you want to trace us.

The big issue isn't nicknames, it's multiple accounts, and therefore we are dealing with a problem that concerns spammers, and two individuals with what some of the rest of us would regard as behavioural issues.

I think the best compromise is that the sign up involves an agreement that if asked for, real name and rough location will be given to an admin as a check if requested.

Most newbies who introduce themselves and explain any request will be fine.

Spammers spam, at which point they can be removed, and the two in question can't behave, at which point they are banned.

Spoils the forum sometimes, but there you go. All we can do is hope that people realise that they can't promote aircraft and be forum trolls.

I use a nickname but have put my full name in my details. Reason for a nickname is that its unlikely to be used on any forum I join or sites like e bay etc so I can use the same nick name on multiple forums and sites (my nickname was a computer user ID I was given at work in 1984 !!) At my age I couldnt cope with different user names for multiple forums and groups !!

As long as a forum/group remains free its virtually impossible to stop a determined person to join unless you introduce some labor intensive or complex vetting process. Sad situation but I just think its a reflection of the times we live in

Well done Clive. No chance that the detritus such as 'Webcam Porn', 'Webcam Strippers' at the one end and 'Auto Insurance Rates', 'Homework Help Online' etc at the other can actually be deleted and placed on a barred list like I could do on a forum I used to run rather than just being banned? There has to be a way of getting them off the logged-in members list on the front page surely.

Roger, thanks for the suggestion. I did actually delete a bunch of banned usernames a while back.
The robots running the sign-ups then re-registered them, meaning I had to ban them again.

I don't have the time to learn how to stop them from re-registering, so mass banning is what you get.
