    Buying secondhand guideline

    Hi everyone,

looking into buying my first microlight and just wondered if you can help with what to look out for on the documentation side of things? I know you need weight and balance, permit to fly etc but does the BMAA have a guide on the full list? I have found the TIL leaflets that go into detail but is there a summary list? Maybe i have missed it!

    Thanks.
    Lee.

When we ran the flying school, Saxon Microlights, we produced a guide for our student piilots. It's available here [link] but hasn't been maintained in recent years, so some links no longer work and it doesn't take full-fat SSDR and sub-70kg rules into account.

If nobody points to anything better, though, it's a start. When push comes to shove, don't take it as legal advice though.

Back to just bimbling in the TST.

No longer instructing - just pontificating..

Low genuine hours, even if it stretches the budget a little, is always a good thought to have at the back of your mind.

like buying anything (vehicle) second hand i always find first impressions of the current owner and their transparency and willingness to provide receipts of work carried out etc a help .. i have in the past bought used motorcycles without service history stamped in the book but the owners garage is like a surgery with shadow boards for tools and torque wrenches etc and the machine was like new with evidence of maintainance work carried out like all the old spark plugs and receipts for oil and filters with dates changed written on them blah blah blah ... the person using the vehicle has an interest in the job being done properly and provided they are capable its a winner for me ..

its not always gonna work but a fully stamped book by an authourised dealer can mean nothing either ,yes there are dealers/authourised service companies who are very good and value quality over profit ,i use one to service my 503 and he's brilliant .. just my thoughts . good luck on your purchase ...

If you can, find a friendly inspector to take along.
