Shouldn't springs be made of a carbon spring steel [educate me!]? Is it wise to change the material used for the spring when the spring might attempt to depart the aircraft if it fails?

P and M are selling them for 4-07 each plus p&p, don't know if that is a good price though.

Just got the Dick Turpin thing.... so you have been on the P&M site

Depending on the length the karting people do genuine Rotax ones in packets for not a lot of money. Karting websites or eBay. Check the free length:

went through about 3 ordinary rotax ones in the same position over a year and couldnt figure out why. Then the other day I was standing chatting to a guy at the back of the trike and noticed that there was a crack in the lower elbow of the L/H PTO side manifold and even further looking discovered that the nuts were loose, not much but enough to allow the pipe to rattle a bit. I think this is the cause of my breaking so many springs but having replaced that one with a stainless spring (P&M). I probably wont ever know the exact reason. That stainless has so far lasted longer than the previous few together at least.
The moral of the story is that the stainless will pay for themselves.....eventually!

I replaced my 503 springs with SS years ago and have never had one fail. They last hundreds of hours. The original Rotax ones have a very sharp bend near the end loops and this is usually where they fatigue, spring steel being relatively brittle. The SS ones have a more gentle bend and are also not so brittle.

Mine come from Skydrive, and they're stainless. 2.50 + P&P+ VAT. if memory serves.
