    Which leads inevitably to the question: what do you do if you get safely across the Channel and have to make a forced landing on land?

    It looks great, doesn't it? I nearly bought that one, though sadly the floats had been taken off by the time I was looking at it. I don't think it ever actually flew like that (I'd be pleased to be wrong on that if anyone knows?). I think it was a sales gimmick/model - the pic is probably taken at the trade show at Popham.

    In the case of the Catalina-NG you lower the undercarriage

    The three most useless things in aviation:

    Rule #1: Always tie your aircraft to the largest heaviest object available. The planet Earth meets these requirements and is readily available in all locations.
    Rule #2: The great thing about twin engined aircraft is, if one engine fails, the other engine always has just enough power to get you to the scene of the crash.

    Yeh at 6`4" and 17 stone,
    I would certainly plough into the sea, stood on the front of a thruster

    Thanks for a very succinct risk versus reward analysis Martin.

    Studying for my Nav exam I was inspired to do North Coates via Spurn Point... once. Probably won't fly over water again.

    If I had an engine failure over water, seriously, one thing going through my mind would be that my relatives will think they were right about flying microlights even though they aren't.

    In the Jab or Quik I've crossed the channel many times, done trips to the Scillies and Ireland, none of these water crossings bothered me but crossing the mud they call the Wash always makes me fly high
    G-HAMS a pretty quick Quik

    Likewise done France a few times including the cherbourg crossing twice alone , some might say foolhardy but everyones different regarding risk.

    Its up to the individual and of course very dependent on how reliable you consider your machine to be.

    The scilly isles is a trip I would recommend to anyone, its stunning when the islands finally come into view
