    How would I satisfy an "R-rated" examiner that I had (really) flown those 12 hours, from a private strip, and not simply pencilled them into my logbook?

    It's and offence to diddle your notebook I believe. Really all the examiner can do is have a look at your notebook and see if it seems reasonable. It's almost more of a declaration from you that they sign so it wouldn't be hard to lie if there's no discrepancies in your log books.

    Bear in mind that keeping current is important to remain safe. If you fly very rarely you will become out of practice.

    My apologies for use of the wrong terminology in my previous post I think I said instructor rather than examiner.

    Dead right. In fact it's an imprisonable offence, and it would be the pilot who did the time, not the examiner, unless they'd been convicted of conspiring together to do the diddling.
